Special Education and Student Services Newsletter for January 10

Thank you for all you provide for our students, families, and each
other.  Thank you for taking some time this week and appreciating
yourself for the great work that you do as well.

Another busy week in Special Education and Student Services:

1. Speech Language Extended School Year Services

I will need a Speech Language Pathologist to deliver services as part
of Extended School Year Services. I also have a parent interested in
summer school speech language therapy but not as part of ESY.  If
interested, please contact me.

2. Seclusion and Physical Restraint in Schools (New Legislative Bill)

The Wisconsin State Legislature has/will be passing a bill related to
the Appropriate Use of Seclusion and Physical Restraint in Schools
effective September 1, 2012. Here is a link to the proposed bill:

We have referred several students across the school district and they
will soon start to be receiving these services.

4. AIMS Web and Lexile Scoring
AIMS Web now has lexile scoring for their R-CBM and MAZE benchmark

5. Add Google Calendar to your iPad Calendar
Want to add your Google Calendar to the iPad's Calendar app? No
problem. In Settings open Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Add an account
and tap on Other. Tap on Add CalDAV Account and enter your Google
Account credentials (the Server is www.google.com). Exit the Settings
app and tap on the Calendar app and all your events should appear. By
default all calendars are displayed, but you can tap on the Calendars
button to choose which ones are shown.

6. Brain Pop
We are renewing our subscription to Brain Pop.  www.brainpop.com

Renewal should be in place by end of the week.

7. Autism Society of Central Wisconsin - Swimming Event

8. Accommodations Guide for Students with Disabilities 11-12
55 page extensive DPI draft document with instruction and assessment

9. Speech Language Pathologist - LTS
Mark Arndt will be the LTS for Eliza Decker - SLP at MAMS and SES in
January.  Memorial Health Center has been contacted about contracting
with them for SLP services in February, but I have not heard back from
them.

10. 10th Annual Snoball Dance
10th Annual Snoball Dance will be held on February 1 in Ladysmith.
This is a free dance for middle and high school students with severe
to moderate disabilities. Music, games, door prizes, meal, and
beverages are provided at no cost.  Registration is due by January 20
to Jill Brooks - LD/CDB teacher in Ladysmith at 715-532-5252 ext 209.
Jill will also need the shirt sizes for each of the students in
attendance.  Numbers and students and chaperones is also needed. A one
page flyer was sent to various staff.  If you need one, let me know.

11. AIMS Web Winter Benchmark Testing Window
Winter: Jan 1-Feb 1

Administration of the benchmark probes can be in place of your normal
testing week and administration of a progress monitoring probe.

12. School Psychologist - Long Term Substitute
We have no applicants for our long term substitute school psychologist
position for Jessica Martin starting in early March.  In expectation
that we do not find one, then I will be filling those
responsibilities.  I will start meeting with Jessica next week for
that transition.  It is unclear how performing that school
psychologist responsibilities and role will affect my administrative
responsibilities.

13. Reading Class for Adults
Designed to improve the reading remedial skills for adults. Starting
Monday January 16 until Thursday March 22 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and
Thursdays. 5:30 to 7:00 pm at NTC campus in Medford. Instructors are
Chuck Prihoda and Beth van der Berg.  Register with Cindy Gibson at
715-748-1520.  Sponsored by the Taylor County Literacy Council and
Medford Adult Diploma Academy.

14. Taylor County Transition Advisory Council
Thursday January 12 from 12:00 to 1:30 at D.O. Agenda will include:

16. SES Library Assistant Position
If you are interested in a transfer to the SES Library Assistant
position (Dahlby), send a letter of interest to Mr. Sullivan and Mr.
Miller.

17. Speech and Language Personnel Shortage Ad Hoc Task Force

18. Building Special Education Meetings
MAMS = January 10 at 3:20 in the MAMS computer lab
** MASH = January 17 at 3:20 in the MASH conference room

** Don Everhard will be presenting a Safety Training for all high
school special education staff (certified and support) and student
response team members at the January 17 meeting.  Plan to stay from
3:20 to 4:15.

19. February Early Release - Round Table of Community Providers
Our February 28 Early Release Day will feature a round table of
community providers. Each provider will share information on their
resources and services available for adults, children, and families in
the community. I am hoping to have a great turnout.

4:00 to 5:00 = Any teachers, parents, community members, student
services, and others interested.
